75,000 “deleted” files found on used USB drives

A research by Abertay University investigators of USB drives obtained on a used items market, revealed that 98% of the drives appeared empty while it was “worryingly easy” to retrieve data. Partial files were extracted from 26 devices and every single file was extracted from the 42 devices; among the retrieved files tax returns, contracts and bank statements were found, as well as passwords and images with embedded location data.
